Temple elephant succumbs to fire injuries in Tamil Nadu

Subbulakshmi, a 54-year-old elephant at the Kundrakudi Shanmuganathan Temple in Tamil Nadu’s Sivaganga district, succumbed to burn injuries after the roof of her shed caught fire on Wednesday night.
The elephant had been standing in the shed to shelter the intense heat when part of the roof caught fire and collapsed on her.
Subbulakshmi sustained 30 per cent burn injuries as she was chained and was unable to move quickly.
Despite the efforts of fire and rescue officials, who rushed to the spot and extinguished the flames, the female elephant suffered severe burn injuries.
Subbulakshmi, who was gifted to the temple in 1971, was buried on the temple grounds following a funeral procession in her honour.
